It was the time of the booming industrial development in Manchester. Her maiden name was Isabella Varley. From a young age, she was very creative and had a deep interest in the history of her hometown. Undoubtedly, such preferences were influenced by her upbringing and the views of her parents. They were activists and fought for Manchester to have its representative in Parliament for a long time.

Young Isabella was very fond of writing poems in a notebook. For the first time, her talent became known to a wide audience in 1837, when Banks was only 16 years old. Then The Manchester Guardian newspaper published one of her poems entitled A Dying Girl To Her Mother. Seven years later, Banks released her first collection of poems under the name Ivy Leaves.

Writing career and pseudonym

Isabella married George Banks in 1846 and took his surname. After that, her writing career began to flourish. Being a journalist and editor, her husband helped her in every way.

Most of Isabella’s works were published under the pseudonym Mrs G. Linnaeus Banks. Less often, she used her maiden name, Isabella Varley.

Eight children were born to Isabella and George, but only three of them survived to adulthood. Therefore, Bank’s stories were full of grief, pain and a sense of loss. Her oldest child died in the 1860s. The pain of loss motivated Isabella to write her first novel, which she called God’s Providence House: The famous story of old Chester. It is based on a fascinating story of love and adventure, set in the time of robbers and plague in Chester, Cheshire.

In the mid-1860s, Isabella and her husband published a collection of songs and poems.

Isabella Banks’ legendary novel The Manchester Man

Banks’ The Manchester Man became an important social and historical novel.

The book tells the story of a boy named Jabez Clegg, the Manchester man, his ups and downs, his path from the time of the Napoleonic Wars to the first Reform Act. Banks describes the events with incredible romance and dramatic notes. The life path of the main character is incredibly fascinating. He went from complete poverty to great wealth. In parallel, Clegg’s story reflects the growth and prosperity of Manchester itself. Banks also mentions important political and historical events. One of those was the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 as well as the Corn-Law riots.

The Manchester Man is a historical novel with incredible detailing. It describes not only the historical course of events but also vivid stories about the textile and fashion industry at the beginning of the 19th century. The novel also includes unique stories from eyewitnesses of important historical events.

Isabella Banks’ cult novel was first published in Cassell’s Magazine in 1874.

The novel is an important cultural asset not only for Manchester but also for the whole of Great Britain. After all, it accurately depicts important historical events of the 19th century, as well as the experiences that the residents of the city went through at that time. Although the book was written in the second half of the 19th century, it didn’t lose its popularity. The Manchester Man remains relevant among readers of all ages even in the 21st century.

In addition, in 1920, director Bert Wynn made a silent film based on Isabella Banks’ novel The Manchester Man.

Besides writing, Isabella was an activist like her parents. In particular, she took an active part in the struggle for women’s rights. In addition, she promoted this idea by giving lectures on the topic Woman, as She was, as She is, and as She may Be. She was also a member of the Ladies Committee of the Anti-Corn Law League.

Isabella Banks spent the last years of her life in London. She passed away in this city in 1897 at the age of 76. Although her novel The Manchester Man became very popular almost immediately after its first publication, its author didn’t achieve proper recognition for a long time. Nevertheless, her novel is a real treasury of important historical events of 19th-century Manchester. In 2015, a street within Manchester’s First Street development was named after the great writer.

Manchester is an old city with a rich history.
